It is recommended mamas wait 4-6 weeks after a vaginal birth and 8 weeks after a cesarean birth before starting a regular yoga practice. It is important that the lochia flow has stopped. If you have a rectus diastasis (split in the abdominal muscles) avoid crunches, deep twisting and deep back bending until healed. Consult a physical therapist or a Pilates instructor trained in diastasis rehabilitation if split is present.
